The history of horse breeds and breeding is a long and complicated story. Some breeds occur as isolated pockets of local horses that have evolved into distinct genetic pools. These are breeds in the narrow sense, but there are very few isolated breeds of horses. Most modern horse breeds are based on populations that have had varying and repeated introductions of outside horses. This interbreeding was brought about by increased human mobility made possible by the horse itself.
